Subsistence on farming in the harsh environs of Ladakh is difficult, but the Ladakhis have done so with aplomb for many generations. During my short stay there, I met a couple of ‘Westerners’ who had come down to this Himalayan abode to do research on this subject, and hoped to carry the lessons back home to farm on increasingly water-parched lands.
